![]() That automatically starts current going to the iPhone. The process is different when the case itself is receiving power, either through its Lightning port or wireless charging. To transfer power from this battery case to the iPhone, press and hold a button on the back of Mophie’s add-on. That said, this device was picky about being placed exactly right on a couple of these, and sometimes took a few seconds to make a connection. We read some reports of this accessory having issues with various Qi chargers so we tested it with four different ones from a range of manufacturers. We do a comparison of the Air and the Access later in this review.Ī Lightning cable isn’t the only charging option the Juice Pack Air also supports Qi wireless charging. That might send some potential customers to the Mophie Juice Pack Access, which leaves the Lighting port open. We tested it with headphones and other accessories and none of them worked. Perhaps the only significant drawback of this hardcase is that its Lightning port can only be used for power. The extra height in Mophie’s battery case makes room for the Lightning port, which allows you to charge its battery with the same cable you’d ordinarily use with the iPhone. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac Lightning and wireless charging The battery bulge on the Mophie Juice Pack Air is not too bad. There are also models for the iPhone XS and iPhone XR with different dimensions. Our test version of the Juice Pack Air is for the iPhone XS Max. Unlike heftier options, this is a case we’d be willing to use every day. ![]() Mophie’s latest is quite svelte because it offers less power than some of its rivals. Just be aware, when it comes to batteries there’s always a trade off between bulk and storage capacity. The 1840mAh battery fits into a slender bulge on the back. It wraps around all four sides and corners, leaving only the iPhone’s screen open. ![]() Quite the opposite, in fact, when I look at the price/performance ratio that's offered. At first glance, the Juice Pack Air looks like any other hard case. I happen to be in the market for a battery pack, but this "five star" review offers no real information that would sway me to purchase a Mophie. In addition, this reviewer made no attempt to verify the advertised capacity and output, which may not measure up to the claims, and offered no information about the source and quality of the battery used in these units. HELLO? (Oh, and the RAV has a smart chip to insure that charging is as fast as the device being charged will allow.) To cite but one example: the RAVPower portable has 25% more capacity than the Power Reserve 1x and sells for one-third the price on Amazon. Per this review, about the best thing you could say for these Mophie packs is that they work as advertised, but so what? That's no different from the glut of other battery packs on the market, MANY of which offer higher capacity in the same form factor at a lower price. The Power Reserve 1X is $34.95 and is also available from Amazon, Best Buy and Mophie.Ī five star rating is a rare thing in an AI review, as it should be, so it's bizarre to see one get awarded here for no apparent reason. The Mophie Juice Pack Reserve is priced at $59.95 and can be purchased from AppleInsider partners Amazon and Best Buy, as well as direct from Mophie. It's our favorite battery case in Mophie's lineup. Mophie's larger-capacity options are bulkier and less pocketable, and we feel the Reserve strikes the right balance between size and performance. If you don't have a bag, you need more uptime on your iPhone 6 or 6s, and you use a case to protect your handset, the Juice Pack Reserve is a great choice. It's rugged and portable and it works -?just remember to bring your own Lightning cable. In the case of the Power Reserve 1X, anyone with a bag or purse will be happy with their $35 purchase. The additional battery capacity was enough to keep our phone running over the course of a long day, and we appreciated the smaller design in both our hands and our pocket. With both a Juice Pack Air and a Reserve in our possession, we found ourselves consistently opting for the Reserve model. We think that most users will be content with the extra 60 percent uptime they'll get with the Reserve. Choosing between the Juice Pack Reserve and Mophie's larger options will come down to your own usage and needs, of course.
